Wel you see the four main directions are North, South, East, West. The four main sub-directions are North-west, North-east, South-west and South east. My teacher thought me this when I was 7 yeaars old! Its unbeleivable to hear about a person who dosen't even know the for main directions! Sorry if I imbarased you...

well, on a map, they are called cardinal directions. they are north, south, east, west.
on a ship it's forward, reverse, port, starboard.
otherwise, it's in front, behind, left, and right.
