I've had one before. In a nutshell it says - "Dear ..... Thank you very much for applying for the post of ..... Unfortunately, on this occasion, you have been unsuccessful, but I wish you every success in the future."

it starts with "thank you"
they mostly don't send letters anymore if you don't get it.
if you get a job, the letter starts with
"we are pleased to offer you"
