Charting your fertility signs is, in my opinion, the very best way to try to conceive (or to avoid, if you want).

OPKs are great, but they really work best if you know about when you are going to ovulate. If your cycles are not textbook, you could end up missing ovulation (if you normal ovulate early) or spending a lot of money on OPKs while you wait and wait for ovulation (b/c you normally O much later than Day 14). And, OPKs cannot tell you if you have enough good quality fertile CF or if your luteal phase is long enough to sustain a pregnancy.

Charting can be the cheapest way to go about the whole thing. You don't even need to buy a thermometer if you don't want. Cervical fluid and cervical position charting can do the job. A thermometer is very nice though b/c it can confirm ovulation and more easily predict that your period is or is not coming. There's free software online and some for purchase. There are books too.

Sources: fertilityfriend.com (software, for free and for purchase; online charting tutorial), ovusoft.com (really good software for purchase, and many discussion groups). The books Taking Charge of Your Fertility (associated w/ ovusoft) and Garden of Fertility.

Good luck

We're trying too and have been for nearly a year. I think I've been on every website and read every book on tips that I can lay my hands on. I've been taking the pronatal tablets and myself and my husband are taking zinc (don't know why but someone told me that it's good if both parties take it!!) We're doing the Clearblue ovulation test, the pillow under the bum, the legs in the air for 15 minutes afterwards (me, not him!!!) and still nothing! Am on the verge of obsession (if I'm not there already) and we're trying so hard not to have ritual sex or get stressed out by it all but I have to be honest and say it breaks my heart every month when my period comes. I'm 33 and my husband's 35.

Mind wise I think you just need to stay really relaxed about the whole thing & not stress too much if it doesnt happen straight away. Body wise there are certain things you can chart to make sure you know when you're fertile (ovulating) so you can try to conceive at this time.
The first thing is to work out when you ovulate. This is typically 14 days BEFORE your NEXT period. To work this out you need to take 14 away from the number of days in your monthly cycle. (Eg if your cycle is 30 days 30-14=16, therefore you ovulate on or about day 16). You need to make sure you are having frequent sexual intercourse with your partner on and around this time. Sperm can live for up to 5 days in your body so make sure you are sleeping together 5 days prior to ovulation & then onwards.
More ways to detect ovulation is by charting your basal body temperature. You need a good digital thermometre & take your temp each morning before you get out of bed same time each day. You will notice when you ovulate your temp will rise slightly or dip and then rise. If after approx 14 further days from ovulation it remains high this can indicate pregnancy.
You can monitor also the position of your cervix which will be high & soft when ovulation occurs. To detect change feel for it inside (squat down or put one foot on the loo) when you are not ovulating - it is low & hard & feels like touching the tip of your nose, you will notice as it becomes softer & harder to reach mid cycle. Dectect changes in your cervical mucus too - when you ovulate it will be slimey like raw egg white.
You could always use ovulation kits too to help.
Start taking folic acid tabs or vitamins made especially for pregnancy, they contain all the extra bits you need. Make sure you cut down or cut out on cigerettes & alcohol & make sure your partner is healthy & relaxed too.
The rest just enjoy yourselves, it will be a wonderful moment when you find you are pregnant! Good luck & all the best x

This is just my personal experience, and it helped 5 of my friends who had been trying for over a year, and it doesn't hurt to try it. We have 5 children, and with all of them, we had intercourse everyday from the 10th to 18th day, after the 1st day of my last period.
So if you started on the 1st, you would have intercourse everyday from the 10th to the 18th.
Like i said it worked for us and our friends; but you need to adjust those days for the length of you cycle. Mine is every 29 days, so if your not reg. then it may not work. But if you are you can keep the same days or extend it by a few depending on your cycle length! The most important thing is to enjoy what you're doing, do it because you love your spouse and you want to do it, not just to make a baby, even if thats the outcome you're hoping for!

I've heard to raise your bum on a pillow after having sex and stay there for 10 mins. Don't know how true this is.

We're trying aswell, but a reading so much about everything, that it's getting a bit like a ritual and I don't want that.

All I can say is relax, have lots of sex and good luck.

right this is an undemanding thank you to tell - approximately 14 days or so after the 1st day of your era, you're conscious your vaginal discharge turning out to be stickier. while it is going to become sparkling and snotlike (you're conscious it once you pass to "wipe") it means you're ovulating. in the time of ovulation, the liner of the vagina will become very mucousy, to allow the sperm to shuttle actual, and it protects the sperm, too. generally, in the time of something of the month, the acidity of the vaginal atmosphere is antagonistic to sperm. This mucousy time lasts approximately 24 hours or so, yet there is yet another window of an afternoon or 2 on the two ingredient of this time wherein theory could additionally take place.
