I was born there and grew up in Long Beach but live in the South now. I entertain notions of moving back, but I don't work right now, and one income (hubby's) would not support us there. Even when I do work, I am a teacher..not a huge salary. The house we live in in Ga would cost like 5x as much in Ca. How does anyone do it?? I truly don't get it. Does everyone make more money there or something?

Here's the TRUE story about how people afford to live in California. I got drafted here from Hawaii when I was 14, my dad retired and since all of his family was in California he moved us all here. Now that i'm 26 and desperate to get out of this over priced state I can't. My husband works 2 jobs and I also work, we barely make it to pay the bills. We can't afford to live here, but we can't afford to move because that takes money too. The truth is most of us can't afford to live here, we have no choice but to struggle and do our best because we can't afford to move out of the state. Yes the minimum wage is higher here, but so is everything else.

Yes, I think the jobs generally pay better there, but I think also people pay a lot more towards their home then towards all other luxuries. I've been told in interviews that "it's not really as expensive to live here as they say" and that makes me really mad because I know it is, and if they aren't willing to pay me more than what I could make in my home state, I wan't move there. I live in Arizona, and a lot of Californians move here and buy properties over the asking price, because they have the money. It drove up the prices this past year to almost double, and it really sucked for those of us just starting out in the world.

you and your husband will also have adjusted salary when you move to CA. you most likely will not be able to purchase the same size house like you do in GA. it is wiser to rent and find out where you want to purchase later. you do get paid more in CA, just like NYC.

Your husband's salary would increase considerably if you moved back there. I mean I know cops who make over 100k their first year on the job in California. I recommend moving back....unless you're big on the whole peach thing.

The things are more expensive because there is better pay. You should move back but you should stay if you want.

Maybe they are all rich, and want to look even more rich? I'm not sure, but they are probably all participating in a new ENRON type thing!
