Well, my dumb car is completely losing power, I will be on the freeway and the RPM's shoot up. But, it's like it's not getting gas at all. It's getting worse. I just don't want to go into a place and they overcharge me. What could it be?

"Too lean" usually means what you alluded to--that it's not getting enough fuel. When fuel and air mix, there's too much air.

A fix could be as simple as running a good, name-brand fuel injector cleaner through your next tank of gas. That might fix it. Be sure your air intake is properly attached--there are screws or clips that hold it on, and the last time your air filter was replaced, all of them might not have been replaced properly; check this to rule it out, but I doubt the air intake is the problem.

Or, it could be your transmission, since you said the revs shoot up.

STP fuel injector cleaner will run you $3 to $5. Pour it in the next time you stop for gas. Transmission work could be significantly more expensive, so rule out the easy stuff first.

Do you have a air fuel gauge in your car that tells you that you are running lean? Do you have a vafc? Get it in the shop running lean is not a good thing sweetie! I been there mine was due to setting my vafc (the rpms to low...Too kick in at 4600rpms... when stock the cars vtec kicked in at around 5200 rpms) and I ended up having to have my engine rebuilt (thank god for knowing people in the right places and being able to use my extended warranty eventhough I had mods)! Any dealership will overcharge you! Could be a number of issues? What is the make and model? Do you have modifications or is it stock? Could be a tranny issue when your rpms are raising or idle when raised and then drop... Is it manual or auto? Just because you had the tranny replaced 2 years ago doesnt mean the problem couldnt arise again! I had my car rebuilt and it needs to be rebuilt again!

It means you engine's fuel metering system (either carburetor or injector(s) are mixing too little fuel for the amount of air being introduced to the combustion chamber.

if the rpms are going up and your losing power sounds like transmission slipping

Hon, this sounds as though your transmission MAY be telling you something.

If you don't take it in while you can, you may be stranded in the middle of nowhere very soon.

Take care of it.
