Does anybody have any suggestion on what sounds to use as white noise for my 11 month old? I'm trying something new to get him to sleep through the night (he still doesn't). I'm downloading them & I have rain drops on a rooftop & waves crashing on the beach. Any others that will calm him?

air purifier - the 'whooshing' sound is soothing, and it also cleans the air the baby is breathing for a more restful sleep at night.

Use a humidifier..it's good to add moisture to the air and has some background noise. In the summer, a fan. They also make vibrator attachments to clip onto the bed frame and it will vibrate the mattress slightly. You could also try a cd player with classical or calm music playing lightly. I suggest alternating what "noise" you use so he doesn't become dependant on a specific noise...unless you use white noise, like the fan or humidifier. Also, it's perfectly normal for him to wake during the night....everyone does, we just don't always remember. He may wake when he pees, to a sound, from a dream, etc. he just needs to learn to go back to sleep. If he's in a crib, there's no harm in letting him play with quiet toys. He will soon realize that night time is no fun. If he is crying, you should comfort him and help him go back to sleep, but don't play with him. He should associate nighttime with quiet. Don't let him cry it out because this does NOT teach him to go to sleep...it does teach him that he won't be comforted at night. Some people will swear that the kids stop crying eventually, but it is only because they realize that it doesn't matter if they are upset because it's night time and noone cuddles at night time. Congrats on the baby and good luck.

White noise is typically something like a fan running or the sound of a humidifier motor. A radio tuned very quietly to static will also work. If your baby is now sleeping in a room without a night light, try putting one in. Some babies wake up in the night and don't like the dark. However, if you have been using a nightlight, try turning it off. Other babies wake up in the night and find it too bright and think it's time to get up. You can also try incorporating some kind of "lovey" such as a special blanket or small stuffed animal. Something that he can snuggle with at night and use for self-soothing if he wakes in the night. When he does wake at night, be sure to take your time going to him. If he does not seem to be in great distress, but is just whining and fussing, let him work it out on his own for awhile. When you do go to him, take care of business with as little light and as little talking as possible. If he needs a drink or a nursing, make it short and sweet. Only change him if he needs it. Gradually increase the number of minutes it takes for you to go to him in the night. Some babies go well into toddler-hood before finally sleeping through the night.

vacuum cleaner, water running in the sink. I bought a cd of white noise at Babies r us for my daughter who was colic for the first 4 1/2 months. These are some of the sounds that are on it. She is now 7 months and a great baby. All signs of colic have disappeared (thank goodness)!

Not sleeping through the night at that age is perfectly normal. 50-60% of babies still don't. In fact around 50% don't learn until two years. You can try white noise but don't expect it to be a miracle cure, and remember requiring certain noises to fall asleep isn't self-soothing.

If you want to put your baby to sleep in 20 seconds you must get the "Instant Baby Sleep" MP3 sound track. Here is their official web-site: http://www.instantbabysleep.net

The sound track gently produces energy over the full human hearing spectrum with an embedded pulse that gently eases the brain to the Alpha state well known for drowsiness and sleep induction.

buy a noise machine or air cleaner. Make sure the noise machine has "white noise" as a setting. Homedics makes a couple of choices or you can get a "true" white noise machine from Marsona.

Here are a couple of links:
