Lots of things to do, depending on what you like. You won't find a Tulip Garden as previously mentioned (It's called the Keukenhof and it's situated near Leiden so quite a distance) Starting from Centraal Station head up the main street called the Dam Rak. On the right about halfway up there is the sex museum (there is also one in the red light district) Carry on up the street to Dam Square. You can see the former Royal palace and the National monument. You can either go down Rokin (which is straight on across the square) to the flower market and the mint Tower. Then straight on again passing Princes, Gentlemans and emperors canal to the Heineken Brewrery for a tour. If you turn right at the Heineken Brewery you will see about 300 yards ahead of you, The Rijks Museum. Really worth a visit and famous for housing Rembrandt's Nightwatch. At the back of the Rijks and straight on down to the right you will come to the Van Gogh museum which is seriously worth a visit. During your walk you will pass many Canal boat trips. I reccomend the one by a statue of Queem Wilehmena on a horse which is on the left as you walk down the Rokin. Incidently practically opposite that is a small street with restaurants. The first on your right is a South American Steak House and very very good. Anne Franks house is always worth a visit. Amsterdam is also good for shopping but quite pricey. You can find the main shopping street which I think is called Calver straat just off Dam Square running parrelel to Rokin. (If you were facing Rokin from Dam Square the street is running alongside it to the right.) There are obviously the coffee shops to visit and the Red Light District. There is a good bar called the Sailor in the heart of it and you can watch customers going in and out as you drink your beer. Food is great in Amsterdam. Indoneisian is a specialty. Order a Rijstafel which is a selection of different dishes. Have a good time!

Red Light District - an eye opener
Betty Boo Coffee shop, small, friendly and helpful staff
Other 'coffee' shops - people smoke cannabis etc or just take a drink
Anna Franks house - be REAL early, the lines are horrendous
Van Gogh museum - wonderful paintings
Find an old 'Brown bar', historical pub with good atmosphere. Can't remember my fave

Get off the tourist circuit, there are some wonderful quiet streets and bars that are so different. Just explore.

Take a boat ride-taxiboat- to Van Gogh Museum in the morning...can be used as a city tour as it takes 3/4 hour to get there from the main downtown area. It cost less as a tour boat....After seing the "sunflowers" painting, have lunch in one of the 'bistro" outside the museum (better food and more european ambiance) Go back to the Damm Square area and enjoy the Sex Museum (tours last 1 hour max) bring a pic cam and have the pic taken under the GIANT.....you know...sculpture! For souvenirs go to the Heinneken shop....and have a beer on my behalf!

Ann Franks House...what an atmosphere that has! (Get there as early as you can...queues at peak times...but worth it!
The sex museum...cheap to get in and eye opening!
The Dam Square, centre of shops etc.
Red Light Disrict in the evening....don't take photos, they don't like it! Very touristy there, so you'll be safe.
Tulip park...forgotten it's actual name..
Van Gogh museum
All their shops!
Smoke cafe....only the ones that display the green card in the window. Babas is best, you can get the strength you want. if that's something you're into.
You can also take a horse and cart ride round the Chinese quarters, that's worth it.
Canal boat trip
Hope that helps!

There are two types of people who go to Dam:

For people looking for a good time, the red light district and the coffee houses are the only two places you need, oh and the heineken factory where you get to drink as much heineken as you can in an hour.

For the arty farty types........well I don't really care but heard there were some good museums there.
