Work out how much money you need for the week.

Take this amount out of the bank....

Explain to someone you trust that you have an impulsive spending problem...

Give your bank card to this person with strict instructions NOT to give it back to you for 7 days.

Also get in touch with your credit card company and ask them to freeze your spending limits. Or if you are amazingly rich: give some money to me and I will be your life coach!

Do not carry credit cards. Only a small amount of cash. If you are shopping on the Internet, go all the way to the point where you put in credit card info. (Keep your credit card in a place that is difficult to access) Then leave it for 24 hours. If after that you find that it is a worthwhile purchase, go ahead and complete the order.

At rimes when i have made an impulsive purchase, I will put the item and the receipt aside and not use it for a few days. If I realize it is really not a worthwhile purchase, I will return it.

When I'm tempted to buy something for myself, I typically give myself 24 hours to think about it. If it is an item of clothing, I will look at my wardrobe and see if I have anything that it will go with, and if it suits my body type and lifestyle (I work from home, so having dozens of little cocktail dresses hanging in my closet would be a waste of space and money---no matter how cute they may be). If I decide after the 24 hr. cool-off period that I still want the item, I will buy it. Should it happen to have sold during that time I figure that I really didn't need it that much anyway. Something better will come along.

Don't carry money or credit cards. When you must shop, make a list and stick to the list.

It is call going broke. That will help. Then it may include jail if you spend too much that is not yours and don't pay it back (like credit cards).
