Glycerin suppository will help. Not a big deal and it will be well worth it. There is also something old school you can get to drink at the pharmacy. It is a clear liquid and comes in what looks like a pop bottle and it is some form of magnesia, but can't remember what it is called. The pharmacist said it would 'cure' my husband (who was taking codine) up quickly and it did.

You should also find out why you are having this problem.

My first reaction is Bananas but you need more.
If this is a typical recurring thing I would say to start at the chiropractor and then hit a book on muscles (or someone like a massage therapist who uses it) called The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.
Short term your mother may be right - there is even a much older (deceased) doctor (name escapes me) who used to use water from both ends.
I also just remembered about dishes that don't have the soap rinsed off well giving some people the runs.
