Good point about "humor" - should have used "behavior" or something else "U-less" as my example :)

LOL
Well Yanks always look for the easy way out, the quick way to do things, so writing an extra letter might be too much effort, you know? i reckon it is also the same story with omitting the pompous "E"
At uni, I ate at Ye Olde Pancake Shoppe and asked the waitress if she thought they had one too many extraneous E's. Got a blank stare.

they haven't, as you ahve stated humor, they use the letter u, but they ahve removed a redundant, unpronounced letter, in the same way they often use x insead of ct in deflection, they spell as deflexion, using a single letter that gives the same sound as 2. Program, we add an extra me at the end, but those letters are not sounded, so the Americans say why use them, and in some ways I have to agree, telefone not telephone, same sound, easier to spell.

Don't forget 'behavior'!

I don't get the Z thing either - 'organization' etc

Snidley, the original English words are:
Colour, favourite, humour, all with a 'U'

lol, well its kinda like how it is with the word "programme", cuz its spelled "programme" in british english but its spelled "program" in american english. Its just that in america the english language has slowly changed somewhat throughout the years, not just with the spelling of words, but with certain terms and slang and even the meaning of some words. Its just how languages evolutionize i think,..cuz in time everything changes, including dialects.

This is just my opinion, but i hope it helps. =)

I think the real question is why are us British people so prissy about American English. And besides, it's their pronunciation that's really shoddy.

Aluminum, oREGano and erb... we should let them learn to talk properly before we teach them to spell ;)

I am a 'U' & 'S' convert.
I spell all those words that way now. It is funny especially to do it here! THEY can stop me -It's a free country! lol

I could probably pass quite a sensible, well thought-out answer to your question, if only I knew what you were talking about.

We tried to simplify things by omitting silent letters ... but we still have "often," "subtle," "sarsaparilla..." Didn't work, did it?
