NO. however!
1)without one your motor will run hot all the time
2)if cold it won't warm up to set temp.
and you run a high risk of damaging vital parts within your engine
the risk is higher if a newer model and or have aluminum parts
also as the previous post stated, it also has to do with emissions
aswell .
So i suggest you go to your local reputable parts store and get the proper thermostat for your year/make/model. engine.

My experience of more than fifty years of hard knocks is that a thermostat is a device that opens the water flow through the engine block and allows cooling to take place after the engine warms up to a predefined heat level. It is controlled by a bellows that expands and contracts thereby opening or closing the valve.
I have ran engines without a thermostat and yes it didn't run as well and if it had a computer there would be other side effects but mostly fuel effciency related.
On the other hand if a thermostat sticks closed and doesn't allow cooling to take place, the pressure will surely blow the radiator hoses and maybe the head gaskets, radiator and the heat could warp the heads ect. My suggestion is to run the proper thermostat , but remove one that is stuck and replace it ASAP

In a rare instance an engine can overheat with no thermostat,
due to the fact the coolant is flowing too fast thru the radiator to be cooled.
While the thermostat does serve to increase the coolant temperature too lets say 195 F, it also has the effect of slowing the coolant down which gives it more time in the radiator to be cooled.
An example is in Stock car racing where the thermostats are taken out and a flow restrictor is installed in it's place, these flow restrictors are available with different size holes in them to allow the racer to tune the water temperature to almost any desired level.
Whereas thermostats come in only a few set temperatures.

An automotive thermostat is NOT a temperature sensor that sends information to a gauge (that part is called a "Sending Unit").
It's a mechanical device that controls whether coolant is allowed to flow to the radiator. If you remove the thermostat, the engine won't "blow up," but it will run cold. This will make it inefficient and will result in very poor performance of the heater.
A "stuck" thermostat (one that won't open) can cause an engine to overheat and possibly "blow up".

"blow up" is such a strong image - but yeah, basically. the engine needs to know how hot it is in order to regulate its tempature by the coolant system and thats what a themostat is for. technically the cooling system is running the entire time your engine is running being that it is belt driven. so therefore an engine may not "blow up" without a themostat if your engine is in good working order and your coolant is sufficient - but if something did go wrong there would be no way of telling that the engine was overheating until it was too late. also you ecu would probably go crazy without a thermostat attached and give lots of error codes

In the modern car it is important to have a thermostat as the computer needs it to make the engine run correctly! If you drive without one your computer in the car will not let the engine run in closed loop and your gas mileage will suffer greatly! it also will make the car run too rich and ruin the catalytic converter costing you big bucks! a thermostat is a cheep part so if yours is not working correctly spend the $10.00 for a new one. you will be glad you did as without one you also wont have a heater in that car and you will freeze in the winter

No.
Having no thermostat will make the engine take longer to warm up.
Having a thermostat that is stuck in the closed position will overheat your engine, ruining it if not caught in time.

Engine needs to operate at a certain temperature to get the best out of it. Any thing beyond or below the will resulted in power lost and increase of fuel consumption.
Without it, will not blow up the engine....your engine will take a longer time to reach the required operating temperature!

No; Here is the operation of thermostat,It closes water flow to top of Radiator,Usualey it is 195 degree it opens, You will not have
heat to operate Eng. at its optium, result poor performance--more gas--cool inside car,

no but it wont heat up properly and your fuel effeciency will go down and your emissions will go up because the parts need to heat up to expand to mate properly. especially on newer engines with aluminum parts.
well now that i think about it having the head (aluminum) not expanded to the manufacturers specs for extended periods of time over a long period of time could help make the head gasket A LITTLE weaker because it wont be compressed as much and COULD possibly cause premature head gasket failure. maybe.....
just leave it in, its there for a reason
wow thumbs down? please explain....
