As stated by many above it is due to the greed of man, particulalry in the Amazon rain Forest. But those of us in this country and elsewhere who adhere to the pointless custom of buying a so-called Christmas tree every December and stuffing it with ornaments and then have it destroyed on Twelfth Night are also guilty?

Poverty mainly - also by lack of understanding about the importance of trees and forest habitats.

Money-making is also a factor on a large scale i.e. cutting down virgin forests to sell the timber and make massive profits.

Are any of those profits ploughed back into the local area to reduce poverty? Unlikely.

Right now more trees are being clearcut in Brazil than any other area in order to provide room for minibg and for producing of soybeans
