I Was A Teen Mentor For *Positive Choices*....

The first REAL job, where I actually got a regular paycheck, was when I was 16 in high school and a few friends and I were picked up in a little van and driven far outside of the city to dumpy little poor areas to sell "Handicrafts by the Handicapped' jewelry door-to-door. We were taught our 'pitch,' and were thenafter encouraged to lie our butts off to make a sale. We went out on Christmas Eve & New Years eve in single digit weather to rely on the sympathy factor of the good people who opened their doors to us. We entered any house at all hours of the evening with no supervision or backup if things got hairy, which they eventually did. I had a gun pulled on me when I knocked on a door that had a No Trespassing sign that I didn't see in the dark, and my friend was raped a block over at the same time. We spent 6 hours in the hospital parking lot waiting for her to be released. We were told that we could not tell our parents where we REALLY were during those 6 hours. I did tell my mom and a few others told their parents and pretty soon the police were involved (praise God!). The outfit was a bogus group and was touring the country to solicit young people for their dirty work. It's been so long ago but I do remember clearly, at the beginning, being so proud of my first check cashing and buying a stupid puka and tourqoise necklace at the "Tourqoise Hut" for $69.00 and having $50.00 to give to my mother! Can you believe what teenagers get into??? [Just a warning out there to any of you young kids checking the Want Ads - please, be careful. It was certainly not worth the little money I made. I also had another buddy, who was on the van, die of kidney disease shortly after the group was chased out of town. I mean within a month! We never knew if all the waiting in the cold for hours before the van came by at 11pm or so had anything to do with his death - we had no place to use a bathroom or to get warm. What a trip I would never want to take again!]

I was babysitting as well in Florence, Italy when I was a design student there to an American-Italian 1 year-old baby boy. Not bad for a student who needed extra money... even I had to work until 4 am in the morning because his parents really love to go clubbing.

My first job was a check out girl at a kmart type store. (I was in high school and I sold a pair of $100 dollar car speakers to my boy friend at the time for $6.00 - it was the era when you had to punch the stock numbers in and punch in the price).

Are you a manny?

First job? Wendy's : ) I actually worked at one for almost 4 years. It was my job during high school, and beginning of college. We were rowdy and goofy as hell. I have some of the best memories from when I worked there actually. : )
