Cheyney University in 1837 in Philadelphia was the first. It was originally called an institute for higher learning, although not called a college despite it being like one. Since inception, it has gone through numerous name changes.

Lincoln University, also near Philadelphia is the second oldest, being founded in 1854. Some of the alumni are Thurgood Marshall, Langston Hughes and Cab Calloway.
