Through trial and error and many wasted dollars, I have found that the best air freshener is Air Wick plug-ins and the best scent is lavender. If the room is large, you will need two or three.
Also, I've purchased oil pots...you can find them at Wal-Mart, and they are attractive tea candleholders beneath a small bowl that you fill with scented oils, and the best scented oil in my opinion is the apple-cinnamon.
When you light the tea candle underneath the oil-bowl, it heats the oil and emits the scent.
I have 2 in our living room and light them up when smokers visit or just to make the room smell nice.
I've tried the reed diffusers, and found that they do work initially, but after a couple weeks, the scent weakens, so personally, I do not think that they are worth the money.
And also, like other's have written, for a quick fix, Oust is the best air spray.

Lysol spray is good for a quick fix and kills the actual bacteria in the air, but making a room "fresh" involves a little work to make it last.
Open a window to let some air in while you clean, even in winter just open it a crack. Run a vacuum over furniture like couches and things, and dust solid surfaces with a product like Endust. If it's a bedroom, change the sheets on the bed or at least give them a shake and put them back on.
If odors are coming from a cource such as a garbage can or litter box, clean it up. Do a quick but light spray with some air freshener and you should be finished.

have the perfect solution. It is a product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a littler purple cube with an activated carbon filter inside that is really great. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays. You probably should place them in various places around the kitchen and house including refrigerator, under sinks, near trash, near smoking areas, etc. They work great to absorb and eliminate odors.. I use this product everywhere and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it and it's not expensive. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Definitely worth trying. It's the best product for getting rid of odors and no messy powders and little pieces.

I have found the Best Air Freshener to be Febreeze Air effects.
I live in an apartment above an old woman who sits in her house and smokes alot. The smell is always filtering up. Plus we have a cat, and his littler box always stinks.
The febreeze air effects really does remove the odors instead of covering them up. Plus, they come in a wide variety of scents.

I like natural deodorisers - try boiling some lemon peel in a small saucepan of water - smells great. Take a look at this webpage for other natural ways to scent & clean a house:

i like an open window...but I live in Florida so it can be done year round. When I did live in New England, I did open the window in winter for just a few minutes to "air" out the house.
