What Pilots wore In those days can hardly be described as a CRASH helmet. It was more of a leather cap,with his radio headset,

it's freakin' cold in an open, unpressurized cockpit at those altitudes, the caps helped to protect them from the cold!!.

They need something to support the radio and oxygen masks.

Simply wouldn't do to drill a couple of holes in the pilot's jaw, would it?
