If your son didn't tell the company about his felony, he can be fired when they find out. Even if this wasn't an "at will" employer, your application is a legal document and making false statements on a legal document is fraud. And you can always be fired for fraud.

Good luck to him.

"At Will" means that either person (employer or employee) can terminate the employment agreement at any time for any reason, or for no reason at all. It's a legal term. However, employer's still can't fire people for the wrong reasons or there could be legal recourse.

An "at will" employer can fire you if they jolly well feel like it, and that's the usual case. Saying that has no legal effect. It's simply a threat.
