Little miss Sunshine,Lost in translation,Garden State,21 Grams.. basically films which have a message/deeper meaning, because I have heard of them being reffered to as indie films but there are similiar films which haven't been independantly made???

You can't necessarily lump them all in the same category.
Indie refers generally to the budget of a film being relatively small compared to big Hollywood films and also as they are made for a market that's not going to be mainstream. And yes often made by one or more independent film companies.

However I would say that they are all part drama, but Little Miss Sunshine also has elements of black comedy.

"Indie" isn't a genre, it's a word used to describe the budget or the affiliation of the production company. Well, that was originally what it meant anyway. It's now used to describe a movie that has a small budget, is produced independently of the major Hollywood studios and whose target audience falls outside the Hollywood mainstream. Things can get tricky though, especially with the way things are now. For example, many major Hollywood studios have launched "independent" subsidiaries.

IMDB lists them as Drama but often with something else such as Comedy, Romance, Thriller, Crime attached.
