Cook what you always do; leave it 1/2 raw from time to time, douse it in grease on and off, burn it occasionally, serve it with things that you'd never in your right mind eat and you'll be fine.

Apparently he puts a heavy emphasis on eating.
Before I answer, consider this: he is trying to make, or has made
your cooking ability the determining factor on whether or not he would commit his life to you in marriage. Don't you consider this odd? Inordinate in importance?
Well, if you truly want this person, and this is his requirement,
since he is the one that said "proper", ask HIM for a definition.
If it's British style, learn British methods and menus. If it's Mom's style, learn that.
One thing I would ask you to think about, has he put any other "hoops" you must jump through in order to be married?

Can you make bangers and mash? That's the key to his heart I expect.

No. Nowadays we eat very well in Britain. We like food from all over the world, Italian and Indian especially.

Edit: A banger is another name for a sausage jerseygal!
