It's all in how you read the Texas Constitution. Yes, we did have a treaty with the US about secession. But that was when we were our own republic. Once we acctually joined the US there was no need for the treaty. As far as how much military we have based here and so on..The military belongs to the US not Texas. If we were to seceed the only military we would have is a militia. The Texans that are military would have to remain fighting for the US, not us. We would have zero protection, and would probably be taken out by Venezuala or Cuba within a week.

Y'all are insane. We can't secede, never could. Why do you think Lincoln sent his Army to invade the South.
There was talk about dividing Texas up into four states when we joined the Union; but there was no way Congress was going to add any more slave States to the Union. This discussion apparently ended when Texas gave up their claim to the New Mexico and Colorado lands in exchange for a nice chunk of cash from Uncle Sam.
And, remember, Texas can still split up - any State can. It's in the Constitution.
New states may be admitted by the Congress into this union; but no new states shall be formed or erected within the jurisdiction of any other state; nor any state be formed by the junction of two or more states, or parts of states, without the consent of the legislatures of the states concerned as well as of the Congress.

Yes, Texas has the right to secede from the union. But, it only has that right to become 4 new states. When Texas came into the union, it was believed it was too large to be managed by one state government.

When the Constitution was written it allowed any state to secede from the Union...it was only the over zealous North (Federal Government) that wanted to keep the raw materiel producing South in the Union...now if you want to talk about an illegal war that killed hundreds of thousands of Americans...but if the South seceded today...it would be different...we have all the major Military bases...=)...so to answer you question, sorry I was rambling...any state can secede...they just don't...

I don't know about secession, but there is a clause somewhere in the state constitution that allows Texas to be divided into 5 separate states.

Even though I wasn't born here...shame on me for not knowing Texas history better than I do. But I do know Texas has a treaty with the U.S. and we can 'break' the treaty if we have proof the the government broke it's agreement with us...which they have. I'm sorry I don't have the info. on this computer.
Funny you should ask this...I was thinking about that very thing before I got on here this morning.

Yes technically we are allowed to secede. But it won't ever happen. I live in Houston and believe me I wish we would sometimes but it won't.
