Chris,,,The engine's valves need adjustment on a routine schedule.

It's usually done as part of a normal Tune-Up.

Bike's valve last a pretty long time in most cases.
But that depends on many, many different factors.

How Often the valves need adjustment depends on the exact engine, each engine has it's own maintenance schedule.

You Might just need a Tune Up which includes Valve Adjustment.
Thats not very expensive.

If the valves Do NOT get adjusted according to the Maintenance Schedule,,,
THEN,,, The Valves CAN become damaged and require an actual REPAIR to fix them,,instead of just adjustment.

That gets VERY expensive.

My suggestion is to take it to a Shop and let them check it out to see what it needs.

It's a Good sign that it's still running,,
But a Bad sign it's Losing Power.

If You are lucky ,,it only needs an adjustment...which will help keep it from causing actual damage.

If you Dont get it fixed,,,,it WILL get worse,
And probably cause some more expensive & serious damage.

Good Luck

*** Don't make the mistake of being afraid of the Possible Expense,,,,,then not take it to shop, and just keep riding it!!

Most shops charge very Little to check it out and tell you exactly what your bike needs.

Maybe someting very simple??

But at least you will KNOW if it's OK to ride, and how much to fix,,,and all that.

Otherwise,,,riding it without Knowing the exact problem can turn a Simple,Cheap problem into a Disaster

The Sooner you Fix it,,the Better for the bike,,,
and Usually the cheaper

for complete job your probably looking around 500 to 1000 bucks depending on the bike engine configuration...overhead cams, 4 valves per piston? , etc etc.

Take bike to your local reputable dealer, and get tappets adjusted ,and a compression check done ,this will tell you if you are in for a major job or not
