playing fast will involve quickness in your left hand and fingers (or right, depending on which hand is on the fret board) obviously - BUT I've found a trick that works is to not pick each note, but rather use pull-offs and hammer-ons in place of trying to pick out each note.

You'll get a more fluid sound and more speed if you pick less with your right hand and use your fingers on your left hand more to do the work.

It also helps to pick out a few modes in a particular key that you think sound good and are easier for you to play, and concentrate on using a sub-selection of those notes to build up your speed with.

The strat guy is almost right - well, others are too, but he nailed it down big time. Use a metronome, learn a part slowly, so that every note is perfectly clean, then increase the speed, only not as dramatically as the strat kid says, go with manageable increase, not from 16 to 64. One thing no one mentioned, but the most important of all, is to learn music theory. You can get by without it, like illiterate people can get by in life, but you are not a musician without knowing it, and it will help you learn faster - not practice less, though - you need to practice no less than 2 hours daily to be any good, and Steve Vai is said to have practiced up to 10 hours a day. You will agree that he qualifies for a great guitarist, I believe.

get a metronome. set it at about 60 beats per minute and start playing your scales in 1/4 notes, then go to 1/8 notes, then go to 1/16 notes. After you can do this with no mistakes, set the metronome at 64 bpm. Continue this routine until you can do it at about 138 bpm. THere is NO replacement for the benifits that a metronome will give you. It's not easy to get used to but it will work.

There is no way to replace hard work and dedication.

Speed comes with lot's and lot's of slow practice first.

Dexterity, strength and endurance help, too. Put your finger pads from the same hand together and put a rubber band around your finger tips and try to open them several times. This will strengthen your weaker extensor muscles which don't get nearly as much use as the flexors.

i think it's better to practice a little more in this!!!
maybe you must practice in the guitar about 30 or40 min....or you must go to a school that learn guitar and other music instrument so maybe your teacher tells you some guitar secrets about how you can be a great guitarist and learn how you can play much better.....

First have talent...then practice and build speed.....in no area of career or activity does perfection come without paying the dues of practice & learning by work.

Practice.

Practice slowly first. Remember, accuracy is always more important than speed. When you are starting to nail it you can increase the speed little by little.
