In order to preserve a culture, there has to be a desire to do so.... Very often, new generations are less interested in the cultures that were so very important in a family/community/town in years previous...so it dies off.
Apathy, I'm afraid, is killing many cultural traditions - and the only way to turn that around is to instill the importance of it in every generation. Tough job today, when kids have their eyes glued to a tv set or computer monitor. Tough competition.
