You felt uncomfortable because you aren't used to this type of toilet in US!
They say toilets where you squat to answer a long call, are better, health-wise, as the position affords the best way for gravity to act and help you evacuate naturally. Of course one needs to get used to this!
Maybe you could ask some friend or relation living in France or Japan, what they feel about US type of toilets and I am sure they would have something to say about this with which you may not agree! This does not mean that one design is better than the other. These things have evolved over a period of time.
Nowadays they have designed toilets which cater to what you are used to in US and what people in other countries too can use according to their practice! This is innovation!
(I suppose your not being able to read when you went for a poo wasn't the main reason for you to feel uncomfortable.)

to employ someone to service out of town toilets to to expensive, they came up with this idea and it works, it's hygienic as you don't have people sitting on the toilet sit and having someone clean these toilets everyday. It not economical.

I think there great, first tried this type of toilet in Switzerland on the autobound highways
