The dashboard diagnostics that initiate on ignition are stalling at the engine check and so the diagnostics does not complete, this has never happened before. The model is XJ8 Executive 2002.

Any ideas or information?

yea both previous answers correct. I would also disconect the battery first and see if it resets. One word of warning leave a door open if your keys are in the ignition, some cars auto lock when connecting the battery again! The other option that may work is to turn the key to the on position then off then on then off, I'm not sure on that model if you have a fault read out screen but if you do it may tell you the code or you may need to count the fail light flashes as this can be matched to an index to determine the fault.

Sounds like the PCM needs to be reloaded, I have seen this on at least two Jags in my shop. I would say the PCM is running Windows Vista but that wouldn't be funny. But it the same scenario. The part of the logic that drives the check systems has developed a fault and it can't tell you that. They will tell you everything except when they are sick.

Since it has an OBDII diagnostics system you can take it to an Auto Zone, Oriely's, or a local parts store, they usually have a code reader, then go to this site to see what the code that is in your computer is telling you. There may be none however and that would require a reload at the dealer. I can't even do that on. Jaguars.

computer problem, first thing you may try is to re-boot by disconnecting the battery for 2 minutes then reconnect and see if that cures the problem. If not then you may have to take To a dealer to reload computer or take to any garage and have them read your vehicles computer with their scanner, maybe they can estimate cost to fix?
