I grew up in NYC, but the particular neighborhood I'm from has more in common with a coastal New England town than NYC. I've shown people pictures of places around my old neighborhood and they assumed it was Maine.
I would also tell people that my area is frequented with raccoons and possums and, rarely, beached whales/dolphins, and they wouldn't believe me!
The ethnic mix also made things interesting: Irish, Jamaicans, Orthodox Jews and Central Americans are the most common groups

In Moscow old a new collide you can walk the same streets where Lenin and Tsar Nicolai and Catherine the Great stood, you can go to the Winter palace and then travel to Siberia, you can see where Myth and Legend take over from reality and create a haunting wind that blows on the hearts of all russians singing them the melodies of the past and beyond. YOu can visit the Deepest lake in th e world and see the endless stars across the steppes and dream of what might have been in the emipire.

I'm from South Africa and I'd say the most unique places are the townships. A messed up place eg Alexandra with shanty houses the worst infrastructure, but somehow there is such a buzz of joy, fun laughter and no matter how bad it gets you wont go hungry or without a roof over your head.
