The C atom is in the middle with four sticks (bonds) sticking out of it. On the other end of three of those sticks are H atoms. On the other end of the fourth stick is an O. The O has two bonds (sticks). One is attached to that C atom, and the other is attached to an H atom. That gives you one C atom, four H atoms, and one O atom, which matches the formula.

Think f C as having 4 arms sticking out in 4 directions. The C has 3 H's and an OH attached.
