The computer is a simplified brain.

The basic design of hardware/firmware/software emulates the human body quite well, and I'm sure the early pioneers of computing designed a system using the body/brain as a blueprint.

The strategy of firmware subroutines supporting hardware is very similar to the way the unconscious works, with heartbeat, breathing etc - all the autonomic functions.

The computer still has a long way to go to emulate the parallel processing and capacity of the brain though.
