But after giving them a bath there are still many fleas left. I guess I didn't know how to. therefore my question is can i bath them again? if yes, how? Or should I just buy flea powder? if ever, is it safe? please help me... i love Asti and Jigger so much these parasites might cause them illness.... :(

It is most likey the little bugs they have are mites or lice. You really ought to take them to the vet. There is no foolproof way to get rid of them without anti-parasitic medication from the vet.

Bathing them with a mild small animal shampoo will help during the course of their treatment as it will remove the dead bugs. Also clean their cage out at least every other day to get rid of any bugs living in there and prevent reinfection.

I would not risk using a flea powder not designed to treat guinea pigs, or anything not prescribed for them by a vet.

Good luck and I hope the unwelcome guests are gone soon.

Guinea pigs do not usually get fleas. If they are actually the little black fleas that are found on cats and dogs take them to the vet to get the proper treatment.

If you cannot see the fleas but your piggie's skin is a different color than normal, his fur has fallen off in places and he's very senisitve to the touch he probably has mites. Since the mites they contract live under their skin it makes their skin very painful! They may even cause seizures in your guinea pig! When my guinea pig got mites, he had seizures!

If your piggie has mites take them to the vet too. Many vets are able to give you a sulfur smelling "dip" that you can either dip your piggies into or rub on them with cotton balls. If the mites are progressed enough (like mine were, I was just undereducated in the mite department) your vet may give your piggie some shots (over a period of visits) and a formula to feed your piggie orally (comes in an eye dropper).

Since your piggie has some kind of parasite, either way, it is best to give your cage a full cleaning! That means a complete removal of all bedding and a wash down with vinegar (vinegar is the best to use to pick up that stubborn guinea pig poop!). Then wash it again with bleach. (I'm not talking about the whole cage, but the buttom of your cage - all cages should be a solid piece and not a weaved metal floor, which is common for rabbits.) You should wash all items in the cage (with the exception of wood items) in the sink with soap and bleach too. Mites can live in the bedding so it's important to really take care of this.

My guinea pig, I'm glad to say, has been mite free for half a year! As a precaution I still use bleach to clean his cage and his accessories - I do not want those mites to come back and harm my guinea pig again!

Good luck with your piggie and please take him to the vet! And do not use thoe flea ointments for dogs and cats because they are not designed for small animals like guinea pigs!

It is probably mites. These are common in guinea pigs. Your pig will need a special kind of bath that you can only get from the vet. Its like a flea dip, just for pigs. DO NOT put them in flea powder! I believe the stuff they need is called Ivermectin or something like that.
Plain bathing wont do anything good.

Ok he could be dying.. Have you ever given him vitamin c drops in his water? Or it could also be from something called a ...but plug... It may sound funny but it's not anything to laugh about... All male guinea pigs get it and the only way to remove it is to get warm water or a little hot water and a q-tip and you will need to clean out his... Bum.. Because over years bedding, food, and other things get stuck and it needs to be removed otherwise he won't eat nor drink. But if you already do this monthly then you NEED to take him to an animal vet immediately otherwise it he will most likely die. I'm sorry for the bad news

Cavies rarely ever would get fleas!

Do NOT use flea powder or shampoo on them! I doubt it's fleas!!!!

www.guinealynx.info - check out that site. It has great cavy medical advice.

It's probably either mites or lice. Go to that website and look at "Mites" and "Lice"

Flea powder and shampoo for dogs and cats could possibly kill guinea pigs/cavies due to some of the ingredients.

No, you don't have to take pigs to the vets to treat lice or mites.

E-mail me if you want more information, and I can help you figure out how to dose them. squealingkiddos@hotmail.com

Trust me, do NOT use flea shampoos or powders on them.

Of all things, Ivermectin is used to treat mange mites, and Advantage is used to treat Lice. But you need to DOSE THEM CORRECTLY. So go to that website that I listed.

You need to get a flea treatment, There are many on the market, Only bath your guinea pig after you have this, Bathing them will not get rid of the fleas or mites alone, so it would be pointless, You shouldn't really bath them regularly it will dry their skin and cause skin complaints, they are quite good and keeping themselves clean providing their hutch or cage is cleaned out on a regular basis.

I think you should rather use the powder, because the flea shampoo is quite strong and might burn their skin.

Ahhh, I hope they are flea-free soon!
