If you are living in Australia, then you should be able to claim it under the sections about having dependants.

In Short, Yes you can claim them as dependants on your tax return.

The only downside to this is that when your friend files taxes, she must make sure not to claim head of household, or claim her baby as a dependant if you are claiming them both.

I don't know all of the details, but I know I had my Mother in law living with us for just over a year, and when tax time came around, we were able to put her in as a dependant because we had paid nearly all of her bills.
