Tilden played during a time when most of the players were from a few nations.Today because of the money more people are playing tennis.Tilden might not have been as good as people say.I feel John MacEnroe,Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver and Pancho Gonzales would have had a good chance with Federer.

Federer would more than likely win without dropping a game. The game was not nearly the same in his time as it is today. Players in the time of Tilden did not have the same training, equipment or time dedicated to practicing as players today do. There was also much less competition for Tilden. Today millions of people from hundred of countries play the game of tennis. All of that being said, Federer is not the best of all time. He lacks any real competition (besides Nadal on clay). Exclude Nadals clay court play and look at the rest of the field, there is no other dominating player in mens tennis. In a different era Federer would not have had this much success.

Bill Tilden was not the best tennis player. Maybe the oldest but not the best.
He would get embarrassed by Federer in today's game. However he would give Federer a better game than most of the guys Federer breezes through today.

It is a no brainer.....but really unfair to Tilden.....watch some highlights of some old timers and note how weak and slow the game was back then as compared to todays "power" game.....just go back a few years to McEnroe....do you think he could have beat Federer.....no way!!......I can remember the change in my game when I went from wood to a composite......haven't played in quite a bit and I am sure the game has improved since then......Tilden in his prime with that game would be "loved" to death by Roger!!!......it was a much sweeter and tactical game back then....and although still some today it is only about "power".....sure Federer will try to convince you it does have some tactics......."yea about a pinch..maybe".......just know the "caca" out of the ball until you get it past him!!!!

Bill Tilden couldn't beat a junior player, the game has changed the tools have evolved and athletes are stronger and faster.Rod Laver, could give him a good match.

Although Tilden was a fantastic and gifted player for his time, the current game is faster and the players are better trained. I think Federer would wear him down after the first set.

of course bill can beat federer.......playing ping pong or chess.
Playing tennis i think tilden cannot beat a player ranked 500,he played another sport with the same rules than tennis.
