I have a theory about this...
First of all, there are those who create viruses to attack a former company or competitor. Some are just punks wanting to cause havok. Some viruses may even be "mini" terrorist attacks on our country.
But... I think the majority of viruses are actually contracted by the major virus scanning companys. Think about it... If I wanted to compete as a major virus scanner, the best way is to be the first to find and fix new viruses on the market. What's the best way to do this? It would be to pay the developer for the source code! I'm not saying that McAfee or Norton have employees who actually write viruses (although, they might)... I'm saying that there might be amnisty payments being made to those who happen to develop viruses. "We don't want to know who you are... We just want to help our customers... Send us your source code and we'll deposit $100k in such and such account", etc. Thus creating a very profitble market for virus development.
This is just my own conspiracy theory... but if you think about it... it makes some sense... The best way to justify a strong defense is to establish a strong threat.

Okay, this is just plain false. If you'd ever done any computer programming, you'd know it's quite impossible to accidentally make a program, let alone a virus. You can make an error in the program that makes it misbehave, but that doesn't make it a virus.
Viruses are made to be able to control a computer. You can access financial records, personal records, use the computer to send spam, etc. Most viruses simply seize control of your PC to use it for whatever goal the hacker intends. A lot of money can be made in this business. The era of making viruses out of mischief or bragging rights is pretty much over. It's cold hard cash that counts the most now.

There are 3 main ideas that I know of for this!
1. Just for mischief and to be and to boast - like " I managed to crash over 1000 systems in one day"
2. To get back at companies (usually Microsoft) and cost them loads of money - just to be malicious after being fired or treated badly
3. Anti-virus software companies could theoretically (my lawyer has told me to say!) introduce viruses every so often to keep people buying their products and to make regular updates necessary.
there may be other reasons to but they're the only ones I know of.

What most people don't realise is that:
approx. 75 % of viruses are made accidental
approx. 80 % are spread by contaminated downloads and emails.
Everyday it is predicted that a user such as your self will be linked to sending or passing on a couple of viruses without knowing.
The ones that a made for a purpose i.e created are generally to gain control of a pc or to view folders.
