To make a promise is not the problem. To make a promise and not keep it is a very big problem. I promise to do things all the time and I do them. If I can't do something at a specific time I simply tell the person that I will try but that I am not Promising anything. Honesty in promising and the intent to follow through is what is important.

By learning self-control and not constantly putting others before ourselves. (Yes, I'm bad for this, too LOL)
OR...realize when you "promise" something that you actually intend to do it. Don't just say it to bypass the subject for the time being (just like saying "I'm sorry" but feeling no guilt or remorse for what you've done).
