A layette, according to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, is the complete set of clothing and equipment for a newborn infant. The word itself is French, meaning "little box," which probably means that at the time the word came into popularity, a baby's complete set of clothes and equipment was much smaller than today's standards! A baby layette can consist of as many or as few items as the parents wish. The basics usually include onesies, sleepers, socks, hats, blankets and bedding, diapers and toiletries. The other items you put in a baby's layette are a matter of personal choice. The term "layette set" is also commonly used to refer to pre-packaged gift sets that contain a few baby basics such as sleepers, bibs and socks.

A baby layette is an old fashioned list of necessary things that you should buy for a new born baby, ie it used to be something like 6 vests, 24 nappies (when they were cloth), 3 nighties etc. which baby books used to say was imperative to buy before you had a baby. Didn't know they still had layettes these days.

It used to be a kind of starter clothing kit for a newborn, containing babygros, vests, hat, mittens, cardigan, bootees, shawl etc. Don't know if they still exist in shops but I guess you could make one up...
