They ate most of the same foods we eat today. However, there was a ration system in the U.S. so that the U.S. had enough food and supplies to ship overseas to the soldiers. So, everyone was limited on the amount of food that they could buy.
Some foods were renamed due to the hatred toward their originating nation during the war. For example Sauerkraut was called victory cabbage. All of this is well documented in history books and can be easily found.
U.S. Soldiers ate many of the same foods that they ate at home. In many cases the soldiers received more food than their civilian counterparts.

Depends who 'they' are, but speaking from a British perspective, very little and very badly. All food in the UK was rationed - eg 1 egg a month, 2ozs of butter, 4ozs of tea, very little meat. People were encouraged to 'dig for victory', in other words gardens were turned over completely to growing vegetables to supplement the rations. People could keep hens for eggs, but more than a certain number had to be registered with the Ministry of Food and excess eggs handed over. Exotic fruit like oranges and bananas were unknown ( I was born in the middle of WWII and remember a friend showing me the first banana I had ever seen - 'what do you do with that', I asked). Whale meat was eaten by some and the Americans sent over ship loads of Spam! I started off saying people ate badly, but this isn't necessarily true. Before the war, and as a result of unemployment, many lived in dire poverty and the rations were more than they had been used to. Also there was no problem with obesity as there is now!

In my case, I was a child in Germany during WW II, we had very little food. My Grandfather raised rabbits and that was our meat source and vegetables we grew ourselves. It was very difficult to leave the house because of the constant bombings, so by the end of the war everything was depleted and there was no food to be had.

My grandfather fed my mom and her sisters their cat. My dad used to steal carrots and other veggies from farmers. My dads uncle stole a pig and they took it to the roof and slit its throat. This was in the Netherlands.
