It is because men tend to go into better paid jobs, like building and construction and electronics and science. These jobs tend to be better paid and are often more of a risk factor too.
Women unfortunately tend to be in the services more, and these jobs tend to pay less. Women are also 90% of part -time workers, and these jobs tend to pay less, have no promotion, have no union attached to them so they have little power in their jobs. As women are the ones who take time off to have children, and then they take more time off work to look after a sick child, it is hard for them to achieve as much as men, so companies are reluctant in employing women if they think they are going to have a family.

It wasn't until the 1970s that there was the equal pay act and the sex discrimination act. Before the 1970s women often didn't have careers, or not in such large numbers, women often didn't work once they were married, their jobs would be as a home keeper. Thankfully due to the feminist movement and to technology women are now able to work outside the home as they now have washing machines and microwave ovens, so they don't have to spend so much time doing house hold chores. However still men are considered the main breed winner as women's salaries are often about 70% of men's earning.

We have a long way to go before women will be treated with the same respect, but we are getting there slowly. I think that biology has hold women back and once women are able to have children in their 50s and 60s naturally they will be able to concentrate on their careers and this is possible, and then they will be able to get up the career ladder and past the glass celling and then settle down to a family once they have achieved all their goals, but are first objective should be to get rid of sexism and ageism directed at women.

Oh get a grip men are the but of insult and ridiculous and hideous jokes in the television and in every advertisement that you see or hear we are getting pushed around by the vag crowd unfairly all over the place and if any intrepid soul dare complain or point out the obvious inequity then he risks being ostracized even in his own home. The Truth is we do not hold the perceived double standard that in reality you as a sex do give me a break.

Another question could be, why isnt "housework" and "child rearing" recognised as being the same as any other type of work?

Basically, because we live in a society that has a history of power inequalities between men and women. In history, women were percieved as being not much more than cattle and "owned" by there fathers, male relatives and then husbands. in sociology and anthropology, system of social organization in which descent is traced through the male line and all children bear the name of the father or belong to his clan. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Genesis 2:24
The status of women in a patriarchal society (meaning rule of the father) has been of the oppressed and it has only been through the fight of many women who were strong enough to rally together that such "rights" as the right to vote and be seen as autonomous human beings have been achieved by women. Pro-feminism refers to a school of thought developed by men that supports the feminist analysis of patriarchy as a system that privileges men over women, and also men over other men. A pro-feminist analysis of patriarchy asserts that gender interacts with attributes such as ethnicity, power and social class.Patriarchy is seen as a hegemonic gender order imposed through individual, collective and institutional behaviours.
Therefore those in power (ie men) have had control of the resources in society and in organisations and institutions.
Men have (because of their sex alone) more status, more importance and more power than women in our society and therefore, womens work is not percieved as being as important and therefore women's work is not recognised as being as important as mens.

The National Committee on Pay Equity wrote to complain about that assessment. It blamed sex discrimination instead: ?Women, on average, earn 77 cents on the dollar compared to men. Some of the gap is attributable to experience, education and time taken out of the workforce to raise children. But there is plenty of evidence that shows wage discrimination exists. We routinely hear from women who discover that they are paid less than equally qualified men."

eFrom generations 'man' has ben acknowledged as the 'bread winner' of the family.
Women were not educated and they were not allowed to work. they had to take care of the family and bear children.
Now the society norms have changed.
Women are educated and they work. they have equal rights and men accept them as a great challenge and respect their education.
They are occupying positions as Vice Chancellors, IAS , Governors etc. They are CEOs of large corporations. They are owners of Large Corporations. They are doctors and engineers, Lawyers, Police officers. Women are in the Army and Air force also.

Even in the rural areas women are forming Self Help Groups and by taking Micro-credit, starting micro-enterprises and earning money. They have started small industrial units.

In many physical jobs women do not work as it requires manual labour.like road and building construction etc.
In certain areas women do not work as their religion restricts it.

A woman can balance her job very well. she works, takes care of her children and manages the house as well.
You have to give her credit for that.

? Here in the United States of (er wait a minute, our new name is Hermerica) women control the office. Say one wrong/bad thing about any of them and ALL the women will stop talking to you. That's power.

Even if you are innocent and the woman is lying,
you are still screwed. Wait, that's injustice...
Maybe where you live, they do not recognize women's work. Here husbands quiver like jello in FEAR of their WIVES.

I have no idea what Crawler is saying, and to Edward.C, sorry to smack ur fantasy into reality, women are not lazy, its just baseless and senseless to say that.Society needs to change their mindset.Equality should be for all.I think when it comes to gender issues it is harder to achieve then race issue, although the principles they're fighting for are basically the same.

Because women are more lazy then men. Women call it "lifestyle choice", which is a fancy word for not wanting to work hard, or take responsibility.
