I draw blood all the time. If you were fasting then it's possible that you might have been a little dehydrated and that would cause your veins to be a bit harder to see. Sometimes veins are "positional" meaning that even turning your arm slightly can cause it to redirect or move out of the way of the needle. Also, sometimes the veins are slightly hardened due to scarring or something and the needle can push the vein rather than to enter it. I'd have to see it before I'd know for sure. It's surprising that she made 5 attempts. Our hospital policy is that if a person can't get it after 2 attempts then another person tries one time and then we stop until we've spoken to the doctor. Sorry this happened to you.

1. You get put in this room and sit you down on a chair or bed like in the doctor's office. Then they take some skin tape and wrap around your arm to have your veins show. Then they take a needle that has a tube and gently put it in to one of your vains. It shouldn't hurt a lot. Then after like 6 seconds they take it out and your done. 2. Not really, it shouldn't. It like getting an injection. It will be over before you know it. 3. The nurse will probably be the one getting everything ready and taping your arm. The doctor will be taking your blood. 4. Yes, your mom can come in. Good luck! Don't think too much about it!

This happens to me all the time. Once I went to hospital for some blood tests on one occasion and it was not unlike getting blood out of a stone!!! They tried several times in one arm, a couple of times in the other, even tried using veins in my hands and still no luck! They kept prodding my arms to try and find a vein, but couldn't seem to feel one.

In the end they resorted to giving me Haribo's, some biscuits as they thought it was due to low blood sugar. They did manage to take the sample after that, so maybe it's down to that.

I also have a theory it could be down to poor circulation. I've always suffered with chilblains which is also attributed to poor circulation. It's really not anything to worry about, it's just a pain!!!

Yes, this happens to me all the time. Midwives, nurses or doctors all had difficulty getting blood out of my veins. They usually managed after the fourth attempt and usually managed to get a little out of my hand (which hurts!).

Some people just have tiny veins but I think it helps to relax a little (easier said than done when you see the needle coming at you!!) just before the jab- thats what i was told anyway as i always got worked up before the jab and this always made it more difficult.

Hope this helps, tc x

Some people's veins dont stand out, my mother and I both have that problem, doctors and nurses take several attempts to find a vein when taking blood. Its normal.

And Im not overweight or dehydrated as the other people suggest.

I have the same problem. I don't do blood tests often, but when I do, it's always the same: they have problem to find it. And always tell me that my veins are weak. During that I feel uncomfortable, and have bruises afterwords. It's nothing to be worried about, it's just your veins are like that. My friend is the same, last year she had operation and needles injected in her veins all the time, and that was horrible, her arms were completely blue.

I'm not saying this is true but if you are overweight it is often difficult to get blood . It's because of extra fat in overlying tissues nothing to do with weak veins and stuff. I would agree though only 2 attempts should be made by one person because the blood taker becomes more agitated because they are failing so setting themselves up to fail. I have been taking blood for years but still sometimes fail and pass the test onto our phlebotomist. She does likewise if she fails.

I have that problem all the time! You can't see the veins in my arm,and they're far below the surface. Unfortunately for me,I have to have blood tests quite often to check my epilepsy med levels and my thyroid levels-not to mention the diabetes tests from time to time as it runs in my family. I end up with bruised arms looking like a junkie!

Some people just have weak veins. It doesnt affect you in any way, just makes it difficult to give blood and theres usually bruising afterwards so dont worry too much

It happens to me a lot too. My veins move around when they go to stick it. They usually have to use a butterfly for better control because the bigger needles tend to push it aside instead or piercing it.
