Fairies are the Little People, said by some to be the dispossessed early tribes of the British Isles. They faded away into uninhabited places, growing smaller and smaller with time as they were forgotten and passed into legend. Oral history informs us that the Tuatha de Danann, People of the Goddess Dana, ruled Ireland before the Milesian invasion. They are said to have been driven underground, where they became the Daoine Sidhe fairies.

Other theories hold that fairies are supernatural beings, fallen angels trapped on earth, spirits of the heathen dead, elementals, nature spirits, visitors from an alternate or parallel universe, or old god/esses who have been so neglected that they have lost their powers and devolved into fairies.

Myths and legends provide a lot of information about fairies. They live on hills, in woody dells, underwater, or in the Otherworld
Fairyland, also called Elfland or Tir Nan Og, is an enchanted place where fairies live in an organized community. It may be thought of as an alternate or parallel universe, a place where time stands still and there is no sickness or death. The fairy kingdom is said to be a hilltop one, but invisible, or composed of magnificent underground cities. Fairy kings and queens rule there.

Humans who enter the fairy realm cannot leave once the door closes behind them. Those who do leave may find that years have passed on earth during what was, for them, but minutes in the fairy kingdom.

The Ben Bulbin country in County Sligo is one of those rare places in Ireland where fairies are thought to be visible : link number 3

But frankly I personally believe that fairies are in our homes and we call them our daughters. They are born with invisible wings which grow as our daugters grow with time. And Alas! one day they fly away from our homes... May they live happily ever after...

Faeries (or Fairies) are part of the "other world", if you believe and if you can gain access to that world then you will know them.
If, like most who have answered your question, you have no belief then you will never know.
Born in the oral history of Ireland there exists an ancient race of beings known as the Faery. Back when Ireland was still known as Eire there was the Tuatha De Danann.
Much has been written about the Faery and many wonderful books exist. If you can obtain a copy of the book "Faery Wicca" by Kisma Stepanich you will find a wealth of information. Unfortunately it is no longer in print and much sought after. If you can find a use copy online you are in luck.
I hope I have answered your question.

Yeah stay faraway from Disney, aside the certainty that Aristocats isn't a fairy tale, they might sue you, ha! ;) why no longer discover a lesser time-venerated fairy tale? That way you've got greater ingenious freedom and could little doubt teach originality.

Apparently from Ireland, according to Vigorous and Lady Trinity, but if so, are they related to Leprechauns?

I don't know where they come from, but I completely believe in them and try to keep my yard nice and sweet and colorful to tempt them. I will leave milk and honey out for them and continue to hope that one day I will see just one.
