When I'm answering math questions out here, I just open MS Word and copy and paste mathematical symbols from there or I just use the Character Map.
If you want to MS Word, you can find a list of Special Symbols on the 'Insert' tab.
Just:
Open 'MS Word' -> Click on the 'Insert' Menu -> Click on the 'Symbol...' dropdown menu -> Select the symbol you want -> Click on the 'Insert' button
If you're more comfortable using the character map, just:
Click 'Start' -> 'Programs' -> 'Accessories' -> 'System Tools' -> 'Character Map'
You will have the same set of special symbols as in MS Word. Just select the symbol of your choice. And click 'Copy'.
After that you can just paste it here (Tip: Use the shortcut keys 'Ctrl+V' to paste)
And voilà, there you have your special symbol...

If you want, go to Word, click on Insert, then Symbol..., and you will be able to do some of the symbols. There are ASCII characters for integrals and stuff, but I don't know what they are. For x^(1/3), I would just do that. Theta, sqrt, and pi are in Word, or some other word processor, maybe. You can cut and paste.

▓ The substitute with alt button holding it down type in the numbers and release if this does not work just type the before the alt code ex: NUMBERS substitute the numbers where NUMBERS is written. Or just copy and paste them from the websites i posted.
√ ∞ π ∑
960 - Pi, with no space between the # 9.
Like that..you should also be able to bypass the filters..and type words normally not allowed.
