It"snot surprising to see most of the prople in this forum saying its sachin coz most of them are indians.Well for me(neutral,not indian and not australian) it's Ricky Ponting due to the following reasons.
1. consistency in batting
2.True match winner(i haven't seen australians loosing match after ricky scores a century but indians have lost in many occassions even sachin scored centuries)
3.tactics
4.leadership(He was the captain of the victorious australian team in the world cup)
5.ability in playing tricky mind games .
6 superb fielding ability.
Well if u asked who's the better batsman then i could have considered sachin due to his 35 odd centuries and his marvellous average.

hard to tell buddy... there were good in each other.. according to me i prefer sachin as best player... but i love Ponting's captiancy

Their batting cancels each other out (to be diplomatic)
Sachin has a small edge in bowling
Ponting massice edge in fielding
Ponting massice edge in tactics and leadership.
in summation 2 to 1, ponting wins.

Both are players of class!!they rock and have nothing left to prove:stylish,technically sound & dangerous on their day!!
but in my book the aussie Ponting takes the cake coz:
1)more consistent
2)genuine match winner
3)currently in great form
