No - it's not polite to spy on your neighbors. They're friends too.

If my neighbor is out of town - we keep an eye on their home for activity that shouldn't be going on in case of fire or a break in.

This is a case when you couldn't help but notice and keep watch.
Several years ago, when we lived out in a rural area, a neighbor's teenage kids and their friends used to have all night parties and sit outside in a car - they were noisy and played loud music - you could see the little red tips of their lighted cigarettes glowing - they would sometimes gun the engines of the cars - competing for who was loudest until it sounded like the engines would blow.

If we knew that their parents weren't home - we kept an eye peeled for possible danger - but they were on their own property - so we did not interfere.

This question so made me laugh. We actually call my street the Jerry Springer Street. All my neighbors are crazy! You don't have to actually spy here...all you have to do is walk outside! There is always something going on here on this street...a few months ago...some people were moving in...before they could get the first box in the house...the mother in law beat the crap out of the son in law...right in the middle of the street. The cops came...took her to jail....they moved somewhere else...
