After the first release for Windows 95, additional versions of Internet Explorer were developed for other operating systems: Internet Explorer for Mac and Internet Explorer for UNIX (the latter for use through the X Window System on Solaris and HP-UX). Only the Windows version remains in active development; the Mac OS X version is no longer supported.
Internet Explorer was not widely used until the release of version 3, which was the first version developed without Spyglass sources (although still using Spyglass "technology", so the Spyglass licensing information remained in the program's documentation). Internet Explorer 4 was the first version integrated into Windows Explorer and other core parts of Windows. The integration with Windows

Microsoft licensed a product called Spyglass Mosaic which was one of the first web browsers.
So, essentially Internet Explorer 1.0 was Spyglass Mosaic.
After MicroSoft made a few modifications, they had Internet Explorer 2.0 for Windows 3.11, but it wasn't widely used as it was still being developed.
Internet Explorer 3.0 came out for Windows 95.
It wasn't until Internet Explorer 4.0 came out a year after that it really became a viable alternative to Netscape.
THen you had Internet Explorer 5 which was available as an upgrade download for WIndows 98 systems, and bundled with Win98 Second Edition and Windows 2000.
Version 5.5 followed a little later, offering additional web technologies.
And then obviously Internet Explorer 6, which was the default browser for Windows XP systems and available as an upgrade for Windows 98 and 2000 systems.

Yes, it is available. But alot of people cant get it to work. I would hold off on installing anything microsoft comes out with until some of the major bugs are worked out.

there's a rule of thumb that i take advantage of with any era of IE. Wait a pair of months earlier you receive it. whilst a sparkling version is released, this is often comprehensive of bugs regardless of if that's the "very final launch".
