Could be the crow is protecting too. "Here they assumed the role of wizened spies, messengers and confidants. Some say that the ravens in the Tower of London are the the heirs to crows which once guarded the head of Bran at the very same spot in ancient times."
The belief and correlation to death came much later.
No matter what, if the crow is following you, talk to it. They are extremely intelligent. Maybe it just likes you. :-)

Old Norse took them to be the scouts of Odin.
Native Americans saw them as spirit tricksters waiting to cause mischief.
There are as many reasons as thre are cultures, but the crows from Dresden Files is a variant on the watcher stories. Guardians rather than tricksters.
Most likely your crows are used to people dropping food or are drawn to a shiny object.

it means that you have a poor understanding of natural history, and ornithology in particular. Today I was "followed" by a Blackbird, a Duck, a Robin, and a House Sparrow, so what ! Why look for `signs`, when common sense is the answer?

Crows are seen as a bad Omen usually Death but not those it follows, Take it as a warning.

They can also be a good sign depending on if it is raven or crow and what they are exactly doing.
I have seen crows or ravens follow people if they have a nest nearby and they are just defending it but they don't follow too far.

I've been attacked by crows and seagulls many times... and I did not have any food on me or with me... they just like to menace.
