It is better because it makes the actual writing of the assignment easier, and if you go to University you'll find that it will improve your marks. Having a firm plan in your head before writing the essay will help to reduce waffling and getting lost in what your meant to actually explain or answer. Seriously it can seem like a load of extra work but it is worth it!!!

I recently have a project and I did it without planning at all, thinking that I will grab any information that is needed for it.But,I have no clue on how the format should start and how to present it in a clear and interesting way.In the end,I just got a ton of information, and some are even useless. So,I redo it by planning it clearly, writing down the steps that should be done.I just realise how foolish I am.I should plan it right from the start but not wait until I failed.Planning is very important as it gives you an idea on what you should do.

As you can see from previous answers, people disagree about whether to plan or not. Unfortunately, planning an assignment is not the kind of straight line activity that many textbooks and teachers imply. It often involves going back and forth to make sure you stay on the topic.

You may be the type of learner who starts, solves problems as they arise and continues in that way. That kind of planning is like someone trying to cross a lake on stepping stones but there is also a thick fog so that you can only see the next two or three steps to take. But as you proceed, the next steps come into view. If there aren't any, you have to go back and take a different direction. If you are that kind of learner, don't try to see the whole thing finished before you start. Just plan a couple of steps at a time and make sure you stay on the topic and don't wander off it.

Other learners like to think about the tasks and solve the foreseeable problems before they start. For them, planning is essential but they still need to go back and forth sometimes or to change direction when they hit a very difficult problem. Whichever kind of learner you are, you will plan, either in full or in steps.

Unfortunately, many courses these days require you not only to do an assignment but to produce an action plan for it as well. If you are the type who takes one step after another and solves problems as they arise, write your action plan after you have finished the assignment.

Its easier to correct a mistake or change your mind in a plan than it is when you have finished a task.

Its to do with industry. Consider a building. Imagine how much extra it would cost if the plans changed once the building was finished.

There is a theory that everything is done twice, once in theory and the other in practice. However to stop the project remaining just a theory, a procedure has to be necessary.

Now why would anybody want to do that? Surely it's best to just fanny around until the last minute then wing it with any old crap that comes into your head?

Works for me... but then I am a genius.

Depends on your style.

I find it easier to make it up as I go along.

Probably explains my lousy grades though.
