Have my job, i am sick of it, if you want to get into IT because you like playing about on the internet then forget it.
If you are really serious and want to earn the big bucks you want to become a systems analyst/engineer for unix/linux systems.

I work as a project manager in application management and support. The best paid and sought after people are those with specific technical skills i.e. in a particular application or system e.g. Siebel, SAP etc.
Bear in mind that the training is quite lengthy and do not under-estimate how much experience is needed before you reach the really high paid roles in any area. I would suggest that if you are interested in changing careers, you research the industry by looking at varous websites and publications, contact universities or other training organisations to find out about courses and speak to career advice people about it.
Career change can be done, my sister-in-law changed from being a nurse to a lawyer in her 30s.
My only other comment would be that don't think that working in IT means that you get better employers - generally the reverse for technically skilled people as contracting is the most lucrative area.

I have spent many years in electronics/software - my area of expertese is Embedded Systems - things like the micro that lives in your microwave, washing machine or even the keyboard that you type on. I am now approaching 50 and have been made redundant, I and am unable to find a job - there are two reasons for this - first I am approaching 50 and computing is a young persons game, your boss will feel uncomfortable with an employee who is older than they are. Second England no longer manufactures consumer goods - therefor who needs an embedded engineer with 30 years experience? If you are in your 30s think very carefully about your carrer change - by the the time you are 40 you will have difficulty finding work in IT

If you want the biggest salaries then either get into Networking or Software Engineering. To really get the money though you have to be really really good at either one of those. Out of the two I'd reccommend Networking. I was a network administrator at my old High School before I came to Uni and it was the best job i've done so far.
Take the Cisco courses and work your way up, be a network admin for a giant company and watch the zero's multiply (for example, my mates brother does this and is earning over £100k a year)

I would suggest you go for network engineering. Software houses pay very good these days, but most of these jobs will go to countries like India where people speak English and where the labour is cheap. I work in a hotel and we always have some problems with the ISDN internet connection in the rooms, fortunately a technician needs to come and fix the problem.

If you like databases, try database administrator (duh! :D) or system/network administrator. Pretty flooded market at the moment though.
Why not consider doing a degree in Computer Science- it's a good grounding and will give you a bit more experience. 30 is NOT too old- don't let anyone tell you otherwise!!
Highest paid jobs are probably security analysts, but don't quote me on that!

Hmmmm so you want to get into IT. well the best way to start an IT job is ofcourse Desktop Support, it pays well and there is always a need for it. if you want to get into Internet design the best way to go is design your own page register your own DNS and get involved in the online community, usually through CSS gallery sites. If that is for then you can take your creations to a design house to show them what you are made of.
oh and don't go for money because most of the highest paid IT jobs are for people who already have the passion for the job, if you don't they will smell it a mile away
