I know that if you take a tiny bit of sunbed before stepping into the sun, the risk of being burnt is smaller. But is the risk of skin cancer bigger in a sunbed than in the sun?

the risk of skin cancer is high in both and just because you are not burning that doesn't mean you haven't been exposed to UV rays.

I read in a Sunday paper (not a tabloid!) that most of the sunbed warning research has been done by dermatologists being paid by the sun cream manufacturers. Perhaps they are somewhat biased? This London dermatologist (sorry, can't remember her name) said that the rates of all hard cancers rise and fall over time and the rise in skin cancer probably has nothing to do with sunbeds. She also said that she felt that at least with a sunbed, the amount of exposure was controllable, unlike lying on the beach.Personally, I reckon everything in moderation is ok. By the way, apparently, a sunbed tan doesn't give you any protection from burning.

They both have a high risk factor!!By going on the sunbed before going out in the sun doesnt protect you from the sun,It might slightly prevent you from burning but is in no way a form of protection from the actuall sun light! x

There are risks with both, but I am adopting the attitude now that if you stop doing everything that there is risks with then you would curl up and die. So I say everything in moderation!

Both are dangerous. Stay out of the sun and commune with the bats in their caves. You will be much happier.
