Because it was written by an English author about an English boy living in England who had English parents and who is living with his English family and going to school in England where he meets lots of other English children and is taught by teachers who are English.
Why is the film about the capture of the German Enigma coding machine in WWII (U-571) full of Americans when it was an entirely British operation?
Why isn't an English actress playing the part of Englishwoman Beatrix Potter in the film "Miss Potter" which is set in the English Lake District?
The Harry Potter books have been translated into just about every major language in the World, why should Americans be favoured by a representative character? I read somewhere (on Y!A) the other day that less than a fifth of all Americans ever read a book so including an American would be largely pointless.
Penny - thank you, I stand corrected... I fell into the same trap as I complain about in many others (particularly Americans!)... using "English" instead of "British". Maybe I was subconsciously directing my answer at an American audience...?

As an American, I'm glad there are no Americans in the books. Part of the charm and interest of the books for me is their "foreign" setting. A token American character wouldn't add anything of value to the stories.

There are Americans in the fourth book when Harry is at the Quidittch World Cup. I also agree with the rest of them about it being based on her homeland.

I have to disagree with previous poster in that a lot of the characters are not English but British ( lots of Scots, JK Rowling lived in Edinburgh ). Nevertheless, he is quite right about the lack of Americans. The paucity of American characters is no more significant than the lack of Samoan, Balinese or Ugandan ones, it is simply irrelevant.

i guess 'cause the author and all the actors in the movie are from England,,, it's fine, Americans don't mind it too much... i'm one myself, and i love harry potter, and don't care that there aren't any americans in it.

Well... I think it was a right decision on JKR's part not to have favored a specific country other than English as England is her home-land.
