The Electoral College was a good idea, basically necessary, back in the days of the writing of the Constitution. It's the same reason why the election's in November & the inauguration is in January: the country was vast, without a lot of people, and they needed to make things easier.

Today, we have streamlined our voting system, and along with advancements in communications, the Electoral College has become outdated. No longer do vote-casters hop on their horse, and ride to Washington to cast their vote for the state of Delaware. Now, we know who's going to win the presidency before the Electoral College votes are even cast, thanks to technology & media.

We don't need people to go and vote for us. A popular vote works just fine... Congress has always done it. The College just adds clutter.

Probably not. However this function is not designed to screw anyone. Since working conditions and various industries located in different parts of the country create different needs for those there, the electoral college makes sure that if some areas have more population than others, that the interests of that particular area do not set a standard for the rest of the country. Think of it as a kind of balance of power.
