There is another way to use the words date and dating. If you consider the question: What is todays _ _ _ _? And the scientific use in Archeology of "Carbon Dating", which is a process or one way of determining how old certain artifacts are. Niether of these uses for those words require the opposite sex, or an appointment.

I cant believe that you dont get the meaning of date even after going thru the Q & A under 'dating'! Assuming that you dont know, here's an attempt.
A date is an appointment of a social nature which a person has with another, mostly of the opposite sex, and where the two persons are linked or propose to link with each other as two individuals of opposite sexes. The word also would mean, to one of the two people involved, the second person with whom s/he has a date.
Dating is derived from the word date. I am sure you would get to know the various types of date by going through the Q & A in YA!
