One must start with tolerance and acceptance.
These are usually learned while we are infants. Our mothers tolerated and accepted us for who we were, even when we were selfishly demanding that all of our needs be met. These are our first lessons about Love.
As we grow, we must learn to tolerate and accept ourselves. This is hard to do if we do not take the responsibility for our own choices and actions. We start this process as children. Some might call this Loving Ourself, but Love is also a binding force and self-centered people cannot bind to themselves. We learn to Love our parents.
Tolerating and accepting others is the next step. Usually this begins in adolescence. This opens the door to Loving others, including siblings and those outside the family. Lust is based upon physical drives. Romance is based partially upon fantasy. Love is based upon knowing and accepting the other person as they are.
Communication, both verbal and non-verbal seems to be the key. It must be open and honest and involves sharing both thoughts and emotions. Unlike other emotions and bonds, Love is unconditional and never fades.

The key to loving others is LOVE. Everyone always tries to say its this or that but in truth if you dont have the emotion of love for a person there is no way to love them. You can be faithful, honest, passionate, etc. and still not love others.

Knowing/understanding one's own values, interests, challenges, stuff like that. One needs a fair handle on oneself before getting into it with another.
